Bubble hash: what it is, how it's made and everything you need to know

What is bubble hash?

Bubble Hash is a high-purity cannabis concentrate obtained by cold extraction with water and ice, without chemical solvents. This process preserves the trichomes of the cannabis buds, resulting in a resin with a THC concentration of 30-60% and an intact terpene profile. Its name comes from the way it bubbles when heated, a sign of its purity and potency.

In this article you'll find out what Bubble Hash is, how it's produced, how it's graded by quality and how it differs from other types of hash, and you'll find expert answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Origin and evolution of bubble hash

Hash goes back thousands of years, with traditions in the Middle East, Asia and North Africa. However, bubble hash is a relatively recent innovation. It became popular in the 1980s and 1990s thanks to Mila Jansen – also known as the “Queen of Hash”, who invented the Ice-O-Lator system – and pioneers such as “Sam the Skunkman” and Marcus “Bubbleman” Richardson, who developed cold-water filtering systems and micron bags to improve trichome separation.

This method revolutionised resin extraction by offering high-quality resin without the need for solvents, and with a very rich aroma profile. In the 21st century, master hashishin such as Frenchy Cannoli helped turn bubble hash into a cult artisan product, spreading techniques for washing and curing the resin that enhance its aroma and shelf life.

How bubble hash is made

Bubble Hash is made by separating the trichomes from cannabis buds using cold water, ice and mechanical filtering through micron bags. The process starts by freezing the plant material to make the trichomes easier to separate; they then break off as the material is agitated in ice water. The mixture is filtered through bags of different mesh sizes (usually 220, 160, 120, 73 and 25 microns) to collect the trichomes according to their quality and purity. Several passes or washes are usually done on the same material: the first ones tend to give the highest-quality, purest resin. Finally, the collected hash is dried in a cool, moisture-free environment to avoid contamination and preserve its properties. On a commercial scale, extraction washing machines and reverse osmosis water are used for better results.

Types of bubble hash: characteristics and grades

The quality of bubble hash is rated on a 1 to 6 star scale, according to how completely it melts when heat is applied (full melt). Grades of 5 to 6 stars vaporise almost completely and are considered ideal for dabbing. Lower-star bubble hash contains more plant matter and is better for smoking in joints or pipes:

  • 1-2 stars: Barely bubbles and leaves a lot of ash; it contains impurities and is usually mixed with flower or used in edibles.
  • 3-4 stars (half-melt): Partly melts and bubbles more, but still leaves residue; suitable for smoking or pressing into rosin.
  • 5-6 stars (full melt): Melts completely into an oily drop with no solid trace left, ideal for dabbing and vaporisation.

Bubble hash also differs in colour and texture. Premium-quality hash usually has a golden or light beige tone, a sign of good purity. A very dark brown or greenish colour can be a sign of contamination with plant debris.

Advantages of bubble hash

  • Superior purity: It contains no solvents, which makes it safer.
  • Better terpene preservation: The cold method stops aromas and flavours from breaking down.
  • Versatility: It can be smoked, vaporised or dabbed.
  • High potency: It can contain between 30% and 60% THC.

How to use bubble hash

  • Smoked: It is mixed with cannabis in a joint or packed into a pipe or bong.
  • Dabbing: If the hash is full melt, it can be vaporised in a rig.
  • Vaporisation: It is used in vaporizers that are compatible with concentrates, at temperatures of 180-210 °C.

Differences between bubble hash and other concentrates

Bubble hash vs. dry sift pollen

Unlike traditional hash made by dry sifting, Bubble Hash offers greater purity because water filtration removes plant impurities. Although it doesn't reach the extreme THC levels of extracts such as BHO, its solvent-free extraction makes it a safe and effective alternative for anyone looking for a potent, natural concentrate.

Bubble hash vs. BHO

While BHO requires a heat purge to remove solvent residues, Bubble Hash is free of any chemical contaminants, ensuring a cleaner product.

Bubble hash vs. rosin

Both are solvent-free extractions, but rosin is obtained by applying heat and pressure to the resin, which can alter some terpenes. On the other hand, Bubble Hash is kept in its raw state, preserving its original aroma better.

Bubble hash vs. traditional hash

Although both are derived from cannabis resin, traditional hash usually contains more plant material because of the way it is sifted, which can affect its purity and flavour compared with a well-filtered Bubble Hash.

Bubble hash vs. Iceolator

Both are obtained by cold extraction with water and ice, but the Ice-O-Lator, developed by Mila Jansen, uses a more advanced filtration system that gives greater purity and fewer plant impurities. This makes it a more refined version of Bubble Hash, generally graded as 5-6 star full melt, ideal for dabbing.

Frequently asked questions about bubble hash (FAQ)

Can bubble hash be made with fresh or dried flower?

Both. Fresh frozen material (frozen while still fresh) keeps a more intense terpene profile and, because the frozen plant breaks up less, it usually gives a cleaner, lighter resin. Dried or cured flower is easier to store, but it breaks up during agitation and carries over more plant debris, so it's best washed more gently. The choice depends on the strain and the result you're after.

What is the difference between bubble hash and dry sift?

Bubble hash separates the trichomes using water and ice, while dry sift or pollen does it by dry sifting. The water method tends to give a purer resin, free of plant debris, while dry sift is quicker and easier to make.

How should you store bubble hash?

Ideally, keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dark and dry place, away from the light and heat that degrade terpenes. For long-term storage it can be refrigerated or frozen. You'll find more details in our guide on how to store hash.

What does it mean when bubble hash is “full melt”?

That it melts completely when heat is applied, leaving no solid residue. It is the highest quality grade (5-6 stars) and indicates a very pure resin, ideal for dabbing and vaporisation.

Does bubble hash have any disadvantages or limitations?

Making it takes care: it needs slow, controlled drying to stop mould from forming, and too much agitation can carry over plant matter and reduce purity. And as a fresh concentrate, it is more sensitive to humidity and temperature than other formats, so it's best to use it or store it properly.

Bubble hash is one of the best cannabis concentrates thanks to its balance of potency, purity and flavour. Because it's made without solvents, it's a clean and safe product, while its high concentration of trichomes makes it a favourite among experienced users. With the right extraction, drying and storage techniques, you can get top-quality hash that brings out all the properties of cannabis.
